Banana stem/Vazhaithanu/Plantain stem paruppu usili is a protein rich and fibre rich poriyal.

You can make many tasty dishes with Vazhaithandu, I have already prepared

Coming to our recipe...lets start with Ingredients needed to prepare this Vazhaithandu paruppu usili.

  • 1 Banana stem/Vazhaithandu
  • 1/2 cup Toor dal
  • 1 laddle Channa dal
  • 2 Red chillies
  • A pinch Turmeric powder
  • A small piece or 1/4 tsp Hing
  • As per taste Salt
For Seasoning:
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp Urad dal
  • 2 tsp Oil

Method for Paruppu usili:

1) Clean and soak toor dal and Channa dal together for 1/2 hour.

2) Drain the water completely and grind coarsely with Red chillies, Asafoetida, Turmeric powder and salt. 

3) Steam the grounded dal. After it cools, Crumble the paruppu usili and keep aside .

Method for Banana stem paruppu usili:

1) Remove the outer layer of Banana stem and scrap the next layer to get the inner most layer. Slice the stem into small pieces and put them in butter milk.

2) Heat oil in a kadai and add Mustard seeds to crackle then add Urad dal, After Urad dal turns light brown, drain buttermilk from Banana stem and add to kadai and give a quick mix.

3) Sprinkle few water (or drained butter milk) and close it with a lid to cook in medium flame.

4) After the banana stem is cooked, add salt, mix well and transfer it to a bowl.

5) In the same kadai add few drops of oil and add the crumbled paruppu usili and fry for few secs.

6) Transfer the banana stem to paruppu usili, mix well and switch off the flame.

Tasty Banana stem paruppu usili is ready.
